MASH Certification

This tool is an invaluable resource to those considering operating in the state because you can use it to better understand the market and identify holes in the state’s offerings. The scholarship award varies depending on the area rents and the sober living program but covers the entirety of a 4-week stay. Provide structured scheduled, curriculum-driven, and/or otherwise defined support services and life skills development. Trained staff (peer and clinical) provide learning opportunities. Evidence that residents increase recovery capital through such things as recovery support and community service, work/employment, etc.

Establishing a strong sober home community culture is critical to success in recovery. MASH-certified sober homes must also offer a peer-based environment and be drug- and alcohol-free. As we say often at MASH, “Home is not a place. It is a feeling.”  Our certified sober homes take pride in offering a home-like environment that supports recovery. Certified sober homes have comfortable spaces for living, sleeping, and engaging with peers, all of which make them valuable and safe spaces for recovery.

We expect our residents to be actively involved in an individual recovery plan. We facilitate in- house AA and NA meetings, and all residents are subject to supervised drug and alcohol testing. A policy and practice that residents be informed of payments from 3rd party payers for any fees paid on their behalf.

Documentation that the owner/operator has current liability coverage and other insurance appropriate to the level of support.

MASH Certified Sober Homes

All sober homes initially certifying with MASH for the first time will only be certified after the certification invoice has been paid. Homes will not be listed on our website or have access to grant funding until the invoice is paid. Upon arriving at a sober-living house from rehab or detox, a woman can expect a safe and supportive environment that promotes long-term sobriety. The house managers will assist in helping her settle in and become familiar with the house rules and daily routine. She will receive help and support from those knowledgeable about addiction and recovery. Our team will guide you in developing healthy habits, setting goals, and addressing any challenges that may arise during the recovery process.

In 2011, the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) established national standards for recovery residences (including sober housing). These standards were developed using a collaborative approach with input from regional and national recovery housing organizations. MASH is an affiliate of NARR and used these standards to create Massachusetts standards for certified sober homes. NARR has since released two updates to the standards, first in October 2015 and then in 2018. The third version of the NARR standards provides more explicit guidance to providers, including metrics for evaluating the peer support components of a residence’s recovery environment.

However, there are benefits to doing so. The Rise Against Addiction Scholarship is intended to offer financial assistance to men and women who are in recovery and are seeking to secure safe and reputable housing in a MASH Certified Sober Living Program. Residents are linked to mutual aid, recovery activities and recovery advocacy opportunities. Staff and/or resident leaders educate residents about local community-based resources. Policy regarding smoke‐free living environment and/or designated smoking area outside of the residence. Policy and procedures that address residents’ prescription and non-prescription medication usage and storage consistent with the residence’s level and with relevant state law.
